Lot 1796
1930 National Academy of Sciences "Mary Clark Thompson Medal" in Gold. Uncirculated. 539.3 grams (approximately 1.2 pounds) of 22KT gold! 3" in diameter. Made by Harris & Shafer Co. of Washington, DC. Minor handling marks on both sides. This large, heavy medal was awarded in 1930 to Edward Oscar Ulrich (1857-1944), an invertebrate paleontologist specializing in the study of Paleozoic fauna and formations (Ulrich has been called "…the greatest descriptive paleontologist that America has ever produced"). Beautifully engraved and designed by Theodore Spicer-Simson, a British sculptor and medallist born in Le Havre in 1871 of British parents. Beginning in 1921, this award was presented every 3 to 5 years for excellence in geology and paleontology by the National Academy of Sciences. Accompanied by the original leather presentation case, with "EDGAR OSCAR ULRICH 1930" gilt-stamped on the lid. Ulrich's name also appears on the medal.
